I have to share this because it relates to student wellbeing which is a major part of health and maintaining an emotional, physical, and spiritual balance in life. Also, it has affected me deeply and I know all of my old students too....
This has been a very bad year at the high school I used to teach at before moving to Paris. Two kids have died, one in a tragic car crash and one perhaps through a drug overdose (details have not been disclosed yet). Both were students of mine since 6th grade and they should have been graduating this year if all had gone according to plan.
But sometimes life doesn't go according to plan. Sometimes people we love die. I can still remember both of their faces as if it were yesterday. Hauntingly, I can hear their voices when I think about them and the way they used to joke and drive me crazy in class. I remember their humor on the stage in drama and their pranks in cooking class. I know their backgrounds, problems, academic strengths & weaknesses, talents, and areas for improvement, and more. Perhaps I know too much.
To Nick B. and Nick M: you will never be forgotten and your essence will always be with us wherever we go. To my students still struggling back home with the loss of their friends: stick together, our time is precious and short here and most importantly don't blame yourselves. Instead, savor the sweetness of life and each other's company and reach out to those who are most affected like their close friends and family.
Much Love & Positive thoughts for a safe school-year ending,
Ms. Glaze
